Women in Alaska

2024-present

Women in Alaska is a storytelling project dedicated to capturing the strength, resilience, and individuality of women across the Last Frontier. Through film photography, this series celebrates the diverse lives and landscapes that shape Alaskan womanhood. The project aims to feature women from remote villages and coastal communities to urban creatives and trailblazing leaders.

Ciara

Ciara moved to Alaska as a young woman and spent years putting in long days on the water; deckhanding, learning the fisheries, navigating Alaska’s coastal waters, and taking every opportunity she could to learn the trade before earning her captain’s license. She has a deep respect for Alaska’s fish, wildlife, and natural resources and the responsibility that comes with working among them. Her experience has taken her from fishing charters to research vessels, building the kind of knowledge that can only come from years of gritty, hands-on work.

In an industry where women captains are still the minority, Ciara has become a well-known and deeply respected part of Homer’s maritime community, not only for her skill and knowledge, but for who she is. Ciara is inspiring other women and helping to add space for more females in the industry.

Ciara embodies what “Women in Alaska” is about. The grit, resourcefulness, independence, and quiet capability I’ve found in women who have built their lives here. Women who respect this place, work hard to stake their claim in it, and are tenaciously determined to keep it so wild and free.
